Some gas stations have figured this out; but it should be a staple at most. When a customer is getting gas, you have them at your disposal to advertise and sell. It takes a few minutes to fill their car, and they typically use this time to clean their windows, talk on the phone, or simply stand and “look off into space” (an easy opportunity to engage their minds, and hopefully their wallets). Most stations have advertising signs to view (above or around the pump), showcasing the goods and services they sell within the store. But, it’s a missed opportunity if you don’t offer them something right at the pump (in view…in front of them). Here’s an idea: sell them something that doesn’t involve going in the store to purchase…use vending machines. Buyers often purchase something based solely on convenience. And how many times have you said to yourself something similar to, “well it only costs a dollar”?Just having that temptation there, can turn someone who might not have been thirsty, or hungry, or interested, into someone who decides they might as well use their spare change or those couple of extra dollars in their pocket. You can make it even more appealing by including items outside of those typical vending foods and drinks (e.g.-cheap gloves in the winter).And depending on the frequency of gas purchases at your station; the maintenance and purchasing of these machines could be insignificant versus the revenue received.
